Things I Have Enjoyed This Week

Corvids Watching the Sunset

Is this a thing? I think it’s a thing. Normally I would google something like this. But honestly, whether it’s a thing or not, it seems like a thing, so I’ll probably leave it at that. Most days, if I’m out and about at sunset, I see birds—all corvids—seemingly watching the sunset. There is a spot where this big group of crows gathers in a tree by the road with an unobstructed view across the valley to the west. The whole murder is facing the sunset. Some days there is a pair of ravens and/or a group of magpies on the power lines by our house, also facing the sunset. None of them face the other way. Ever. They’re not there earlier in the day and they leave when it’s dark. I CHOOSE TO BELIEVE.

If you don’t know the Beths, I would start here:

A Clean(-ish) Office

Somewhat. I cleaned up my office, cleared off my desk. So much better…compared to the hell on wheels it used to be. Sometimes little victories are gigantic victories.

Noticing the Seasons Change

Being up in the mountains means being more connected to the elements. According to the calendar and the day to day weather around town, it’s still very much summer. Hot as balls, a real skillet with the occasional breeze or brief and violent rain. But higher up in the mountains, you can tell the summer is being traded for fall. When I go up on the shadow side of the ridge in the late afternoon/early evening, it’s much cooler already, the sun is a little lower in the sky, the quality of light has shifted. Fall is starting to show up.

Strawberry Rock

For some reason there were a bunch of big rocks next to a parking lot that had all been painted red. One of them has become a strawberry.

You Know That Thing Where You’re Driving Along, Listening to Something Killer and You Stick Your Hand Out the Window and Let it Kinda Surf the Air?

Totally did that and it totally ruled. It’s a classic for a reason.

Levon by Elton John, Darling Be Home Soon by the Lovin’ Spoonful, Moonlight Mile by The Rolling Stones

All three of these songs have such great strings on them. And it’s not just a textural thing. It’s not pads or a big wash or a drone to round out the sound. It’s as if during the writing process there was a cool guitar or piano part and someone said “let’s take that riff and give it to the orchestra.” It’s so cool.
